Invitation to the Fujihara seminar
"Progress in physics of the sun and stars: a new era in helio- and asteroseismology"
Dear Colleagues,
This is the first announcement of "Progress in physics of the sun and stars: a new era in helio- and asteroseismology", an international conference dedicated to discussions of recent progress in helio- and asteroseismology with emphases on their impacts on physics of the sun and the stars. The conference is to take place in Hakone, Japan, from the 25th to the 30th of November, 2012.
Following the first Oji Seminar on the subject in 1989, the second conference was organized in March 2011, which was another successful event but was held under the inescapable shadow of the 11-March Earthquake that devastated Japan. We are pleased to have the opportunity to follow up that event in November 2012 on the same venue, "The Prince Hakone", a hotel sitting on the shore of Lake Ashi with a magnificent view of Mt. Fuji.
In helio- and asteroseismology, arguably more than in any other branches of astrophysics, interactions between theorists and observers play a crucial role in advancement of the subject. We live in a wonderful new era with space missions such as Solar Dynamics Observatory, MOST, CoRoT, Kepler operating, where observational data of unprecedent quality stimulate both theoretical and observational efforts.
The prime purpose of the conference is to bring together researchers who have been actively working in the field of helio- and
asteroseismology and related fields to share their latest results, to discuss future approaches and to exchange various ideas. How helpful is helio- and asteroseismology in investigating the physical processes in the stars? How useful is helio- and asteroseismology in unraveling various kinds of unsolved problems in solar and stellar physics? What new physics has emerged from helio- and asteroseismology and what can be expected in the future?
All the participants are supposed to stay in the same hotel, "The Prince Hakone'', during the seminar so that they can easily make informal exchange of ideas in a relaxed atmosphere after the formal sessions.
We would like to encourage you to come to Hakone and join the discussion of new results as well as of our future directions. If you intend to come, please advise us by email to: shibahashi@astron.s.u-tokyo.ac.jp .
Please note that the capacity of the venue and other practical considerations force us to limit the number of participants; priority will have to go to those who expressed their intention to participate early.

Conference announcement: "Progress in physics of the sun and stars: a new era in helio- and asteroseismology"
Special Session 13 at the Beijing IAU General Assembly
ANNOUNCEMENT
"High-precision tests of stellar physics from high-precision photometry"
Special Session 13 at the Beijing General Assembly of the IAU
August 27-31, 2012
Meeting web site:
http://www.stsci.edu/institute/conference/iausps13
MOTIVATION
Stellar physics has been revitalized by the search for exoplanets and the need to understand stellar behavior fully in order to extract subtle planetary signatures. The same missions that have made exoplanet discoveries possible (especially CoRoT and Kepler) are providing dramatic new insights into the physics of stars across the H-R diagram. In addition to these space-based time-domain missions, there have been ground-based studies (WASP, HATNet, XO, OGLE, MACHO, etc.), and similar observations that have pushed the limits of observational precision to get exciting new results.
Given this rich trove of new information, how good, in fact, are our stellar models? Are the interior parameters inferred from seismology consistent with solar models? Can we gain insight into the abundance scale controversy for the Sun? Do we understand stellar pulsations as well as we thought? What about multiple populations in clusters? Each of these kinds of stars brings into the picture particular physical processes that get probed by the observations. It is all of that taken together that needs to now be explored in a symposium.
You are invited to participate in this Special Session. Please note that all administrative functions for this meeting are handled by the IAU. For information on registration, travel grants, abstract submission, and so on, go to the IAU web pages at:
www.astronomy2012.org/dct/page/1
Contributed talks and posters are welcome. Note that abstracts are to be submitted to the IAU at the above link and that they are due by February 29, 2012. You can also contact me for additional information and to let me know that you have submitted an abstract.

Joint Discussion Proposal for IAU-GA in Rio, 2009
Dear all,
As many of you may remember, during the AP#CP workshop in Vienna, last September, we have discussed the proposal for a Joint Discussion that we hope can be approved by the IAU, to be held during the next IAU General Assembly, in Rio, 2009. As agreed, the proposal was submitted to the IAU, in response to the call issued for letters of intent, with the deadline of September, 15. You can download the proposal at:
http://www.astro.up.pt/~mcunha/documents.
The deadline for submitting the final version of the proposal is December, 1st. If you have additional comments/suggestions to its format and/or content, please let me know.
Suggestions already received, which shall be implemented, concern:
1) A stronger highlight of rotation, in the scientific rational;
2) A stronger highlight of atomic data, in the actual programme.
Thank you in advance for your interest.
Best wishes,
Margarida

The role of the Working Group and Plans for the Future
Dear all,
At each General Assembly, the International Astronomical Union has to determine the continuation or discontinuation of Commissions and Working Groups. Consequently, I intend to prepare a short letter emphasizing the role of the IAU-Working Group on Ap and related stars in bringing together a community with a diversity of expertise and scientific interests, and describing our plans for the next three years.
Although our working group exits beyond the IAU, discussing about the role it may play in the CP community is always a good exercise. Thus, I would like to take this opportunity to suggest that we share some ideas in this respect. Here are some questions to trigger the discussion:
1) What should be our plans for the next triennium (generally speaking, and in terms of specific activities)?
2) Should the WG play other roles besides promoting the reunion and information exchange between its members? If yes, which roles?
3) Is this forum of any use for those working on CP stars? How could it be improved?
Thanks in advance for your participation!

Observations of Sigma Ori E (HD 37479)
Hello all,
I am a graduate student at the University of Delaware writing my PhD on observations of magnetic massive stars, more specifically Sigma Ori E (HD 37479, B2Vp He-strong star). Photometry was taken in the 1970's, and from literature it appears not again until 2004. Thus, I am wondering if there are data out there of this star that were taken, but not reported in that time period from 1980-2000. We are trying to measure whether the period of this star has changed since the initial measurements in the 70's, however it is difficult to discern without any data in those two decades. If you have any data (photometric or otherwise) that was unpublished of HD 37479, please contact me at meo at udel dot edu.
Thank you,
Mary Oksala

First Announcement: Progress in understanding the physics of Ap and related stars
Dear Colleagues,
This is a First Announcement of the Joint Discussion:
**Progress in understanding the physics of Ap and related stars**
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, 3-5 August 2009
Key words
---------
Stellar: pulsations, convection, rotation, diffusion and magnetism.
Motivation
----------
Chemically Peculiar (CP) stars are stage to a diversity of physical phenomena, such as pulsations, convection, rotation, accretion, diffusion or magnetism. As a consequence, they offer unique and colorful laboratory for examining and studying these phenomena simultaneously, competitively and in parallel, ultimately enriching the whole gamut of stellar physics.
During this Joint Discussion many new results from high-quality data of CP stars and sophisticated theoretical models will be presented. The techniques used to infer the data, and the ingredients of the models with which the data is compared will be discussed. Future challenges, expected in the context of new ground-based instrumentation, and of space missions recently launched or in preparation, will give the final tone to the Joint Discussion.

'Wish list for Atomic and Molecular data' - closing date June 16, 2008
Dear colleagues,
I am about to close the 'first issue' of the 'Wish list for Atomic and Molecular data'. So far we had the following 'requests' (please, see comments to my first entrance on this subject -- on October 26.2007 -- for the details).
1) A new analysis of Xe II for wavelengths, and better transition probabilities for transitions in the 3500-4800 A wavelength range;
2) Improvement in the wavelengths of iron peak elements, in particular for CrI and CrII;
3) More lines of rare earths elements, for model calculations;
4) Better data in the red and infrared;
5) Improvements in the gf values of Cr II, especially those lines near H-beta. Recent work has improved the values of two lines of multiplet 30 and it would be nice to have better values for the rest of these lines.
6) Oscillator strengths and classifications are lacking for a number of lines found in the Re II spectrum of the star HD 65949 (between 3731 and 4904 AA). Also, of fourteen lines attributed wholly or partially to Os II in the same star, only one has an entry in the VALD database. There are no Te II lines in the VALD database. Also, f-values are lacking for lines of Ru II in the visible.
If you want to add any requests to this list before I write a brief document to send to the president of the Commission on Atomic and Molecular data, please send your requests before June 16, 2008. If possible, use this forum to make your requests. If you cannot do so, you can write to me on mcunha@astro.up.pt.
Best wishes,
Margarida

Also, of fourteen lines attributed wholly or partially to Os II in the same star, only one has an entry in the VALD database. There are no Te II lines in the VALD database. Also, f-values are lacking for lines of Ru II in the visible.
If you want to add any requests to this list before I write a brief document to send to the president of the Commission on Atomic and Molecular data, please send your requests before June 16, 2008. If possible, use this forum to make your requests. If you cannot do so, you can write to me on mcunha@astro.up.pt.
Best wishes,

Wish list for 'Atomic and molecular data'
Dear all,
During the CP#AP workshop in Vienna, it has been suggested that a 'Wish List' concerning needed atomic and related data, should be collected by the community.
With this entry, I would like to ask all of you with interest in this issue, to share, via this forum, your own 'requests', i.e., to let us know what additional data would you like to see provided by the community working on Atomic data.
At the end of the discussion, if enough material is collected, I shall prepare the 'Wish List' based on your contributions and send it to the president of commission 14.
Thank you in advance for your collaboration.
